The Liberties

Walked to a museum north of the Liffey today and went through the area of town that I'm covering for the Liberty newspaper. The area is called the Liberties because it was once outside of Dublin's city walls, therefore they did not have to pay taxes to the city (I think I just heard every Tea Party Nation member quiver at the thought). Here are two shots from my walk.

The statue of the Sacred Heart, found on Gray Street, was a well-known location for drug dealing, particularly heroin, in the 1970s and '80s. In 1979, the statue and surrounding area was cleaned up by the city of Dublin in preparation for Pope John Paul II's visit, but the Pope did not pass through the Liberties.

"Vote No" graffiti can be found all over the city of Dublin from the 2008 referendum of the Lisbon Treaty. Many argued that the treaty centralized the EU and weakened democracy.

I'm finally getting some photos up from my first few days here in Dublin! Sorry for the delay. Everything has been a little hectic since arrival. I went to a parade yesterday with the other Mizzou students as well as some new friends. I hate shooting parades, but I figured I might as well get some shots while I can. Lots more to come (but not from the parade).

(31 January 2010) A participant in the Tradfest Parade marches past an art exhibit located on Temple Bar in Dublin, Ireland. The parade was the capstone to a weekend of music fesitivies around Temple Bar.

Unexpected/Needed Break

Matt and I had an impromptu photo shoot yesterday and ended up with some fun stuff. It actually turned into a mildly political statement. Completely unintentional. I personally don't agree with the message conveyed, but I think it was an interesting challenge for me to intentionally photograph and publish something that goes against what I think politically.

And obviously this one just simply confirms that Matt and I have a very strange relationship. One that I will definitely miss while in Dublin.

A Final Project

Here it is! My group's final project for Advanced Techniques in Photojournalism. I'm very proud of this piece, but also very glad it's done. My final project group has been photographing the Missouri Contemporary Ballet this week. They're performing at the Missouri Theatre Center for the Arts tonight and tomorrow. We were allowed into the theatre in order to photograph them. While the dancers broke for lunch, I took advantage of the downtime and photographed the theatre itself. Filling and Balancing

This assignment involves using my strobe (or flash) to show light that can be seen by the human eye, but cannot be captured as easily by the camera. "Filling" a photo is using the flash to eliminate shadows on a subject in a "high noon" situation. So I went tailgating! They were definitely the kindest crowd I've ever photographed (and most generous with their beverages). I've withheld the caption as requested by the subjects.

An outtake. I used the strobe in this situation to balance the light coming in from the window, which was extremely bright. Using the flash and adjusting my own camera settings will bring down the harsh light behind the subject (which was putting her face in shadow) and put more light on her face.

I'm choosing this one because I just watched it the other day (thanks to Anjali) and also because we discussed how to handle different languages/subtitles. Born Again Nikonist

So, I like shooting with Nikon... A lot. And they are kind to our school so that makes me like them even more. I've checked out a Nikon D3 with a fixed 28 mm and an SB-900 speedlight for the weekend. I decided to take the long way home tonight from work and popped off a few shots. Here's one. Another can be seen on my flickr.

Concerning the above photo, this reminds me of my high school days when I did a lot of street photography. I really look forward to delving back into this style while in Dublin next semester.

(October 5, 2009) The acoustic guitar and harmonica have been a staple in modern American folk music. The skill of playing both instruments simultaneously has been pursued by many, but mastered by few. The folk genre found a new gusto in the early 20th century with artists such as Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. The influence of Guthrie, Seeger and their peers has spilled over into other genres and heavily influenced artists from Bob Dylan to Mason Jennings.

This project was actually "Metal and Glass" but I accidentally typed class instead and it made me giggle. I, obviously, took the metal part of the assignment.

As typical as it is to choose an Avedon when told to pick a portrait, I did it anyways. Avedon was the master of capturing the real moment. And trying to capture a real moment with actors, politicians, and musicians isn't exactly that easy. This portrait stands out most to me, however, because the only reason this man was photographed was because he was involved in dropping an atomic bomb on 140,000 humans. And his expression captures the anguish I can only imagine he had to live with.

To Rita and Jarrad, here are my shots. To everyone else, these shots are from a copy test and white balance exploration assignment. The photo of Quinten Tarantino and the frogs are pictures of pictures (before scanners, you took a picture of a picture). The other two are explorations in white balance, one is shot on daylight and the other on tungsten. To me, these photos suck, but the semester has just begun.

On-Set Once Again

My friend, Jeff Venable, asked me to shoot the production of an 8 minute short film that he had to create and complete in 48 hours. He's participating in the annual Nashville 48 Hour Film Project. 8 minutes doesn't sound like a whole lot, but shooting 8 minutes of a film can take (as proven today) an entire day, if not longer. Friday night was the brainstorming and script writing process; today was shooting and now Jeff is currently editing all the scenes. He'll turn it in tomorrow evening.

These are just a few of the shots that I got over the past 24 hours. I would attempt to explain the plot; but even I don't really know it since when I left it still involved an astronaut, aliens and a bat that bit people and they turned into cameras.

(None of those were actually in the legitimate ideas bucket... They were all my ideas...)

I made an attempt today to photograph suburbia. I grew up in the middle of the woods (literally), so suburban life is something rather odd to me. You people with your trash collection, neighborhood watches and lawn care. Here is my idea of suburbia (probably more shots to come in the next few days).

I've never liked the idea of driving down a road with signs saying "dead" on it.

I did this my junior year of high school in my graphic design/photography class. Assignment was to find any book and create a completely new cover for it. Photos and design are all mine. I chose this book obviously for the irony in the photographs. Won a "gold key" level award in the Scholastic Art Awards at the Tennessee level.

Looking at it now, I see different ways I could have improved on it.

Here are three shots that I dug up from my archives this evening. I got a little bored and also inspired from looking at Avedon photos all day. These were taken in 2004. Decided to give them a new spin, run them through photoshop for the first time. They're film negatives scanned by Wolf Camera, so the quality may not be fantastic, but I think they work.

I've been doing this pretty much all week. I took yesterday off intentionally because everything was starting to look the same and everything tasted like oregano. We're planning to have individual posters for each character. Initially we were just going to tape an object onto each of them, but the way I shot them didn't allow that (my own fault). So I decided to cut out each character as well as their assigned object. The subject on the right doesn't have an object because his character is so out-of-place in the film that his being taped in explains enough (at least, that's the desired affect).

Type and taglines soon to come. Movie to come at some point in this century.

Coming Out of the Closet in 2009!

After speaking with the director, we decided to change out the top actor's head because his expression didn't seem appropriate with the bottom actor's. Now they both have very 1980s cinematic expressions.

So this is a very early rendition of a movie poster I'm working on for the film I shot this summer. The idea behind all these promotional posters is to convey that this film is a very 1980s blockbuster type film. We really wished we had a painter to paint our posters for us, but seeing as none of us are being paid, that didn't really work out. So I'm left to the magic of photoshop. Thanks Adobe!

We had our photoshoot today. The director, director of photography and I had a brainstorming meeting a few days ago and came up with some great ideas. I think I made a mistake I used to make all the time when I first started taking photos though. I had already drawn these images in my mind and so when I was shooting I was getting more and more disappointed that I wasn't getting what was in my head. I thought I had overcome this but, apparently, I was in totally new territory and reverted to a less experienced sense of state. Real existential shit.

The Pinnacles

My friend Kevin and I went out to Pinnacles Youth Park (which sounds kind of like a Mormon camp, but don't worry, it's not). We thought we were going to have to do some intense hiking in order to get to this giant rock formation. Turns out you just park your car and walk about 100 feet. The real challenge was scaling this huge rock. And me being moderately afraid of heights, and having no rock climbing experience did not help. But, we made it to the top and when I wasn't clutching onto the side of the rock for dear life I got a few shots. These are the best. Hope you enjoy.

My Filters Bring All the Boys to the Yard

For the past five years I have gone to Chicago every summer as part of a team from my church youth group to help out Armitage Baptist Church. This year I went as a leader. Definitely a different experience leading students rather than being the student. I didn't take as many pictures this year compared to last year, but I feel like I got some good shots. I also wanted to change it up this year. The editing process was more intense and a bit more exotic, did some vignetting and Phoebe-Sexton-copyrighted black bordering. All of them are on my flickr.

The past two shoot days have been a bit slower for me. I feel like I've gotten a majority of the shots that I need, so I'm shooting a lot less. I'm mainly trying to find more diversity in the shots and I'm aiming for more screen shots, Rotten Tomatoes style. More to come next week, then I'm off to South Carolina for my sister's wedding (maybe some photos from that) and then Chicago (which I'll definitely have photos from).

Okay, so I've been a terrible mother bear and haven't updated with actual pictures since the semester ended. I'll say 20 hail Mary's tonight... But now I actually have photos. Yay! These are from the first day of shooting for a film that my friend is making titled "The Time Closet". I hope you enjoy, I had a lot of fun shooting and am starting to think this is something I could seriously get into (on set photography, that is).

Back in Black (& White)

Okay, so I realize it's been over a month since I've put pictures up, and I do apologize for that. The past month has been nuts though, and updating the blog was lower on my list of priorities. So, here is my final project. It's not that great, and I know I'm missing some good shots, but I only had about a week to do it because I can't do anything in a timely manner. Nonetheless, enjoy.

Hiroki Aoyama moved to Columbia, Missouri from Aichi, Japan three years ago in order to attend the University of Missouri to study International Studies. He found MU through a study abroad agency in Japan and was given his choice of universities in America. Aoyama has adapted to American life with relative ease (except for the food). This being his first trip outside of Japan, and the first of his family to come to America, he was very shocked culturally when he started his college life. "College life in U.S. is more difficult than my country," Aoyama said. He's grown more comfortable with the lifestyle of the American college student during his time here though.
Contact with his family back in Japan is rather complicated. The only time he usually speaks with his mother or father on the telephone is when he needs them to send money. Any other conversation is held via email.
Aoyama has found friendship mostly with students from other countries, mostly Asian countries. His experience with Americans, however, has been only friendly. Aoyama noted that people in Japan don't compliment each other on their clothing or little things like that, but Americans do; something he found intriguing and very friendly of Americans.
Verbal communication is a big barrier for him, but an even bigger barrier for Hiroki is emotional communication. Aoyama explained that in Japan, he doesn't have to explain how he feels, his behavior alone can explain to his family and friends how he feels. In America, everyone has to be told how he feels, he can't feel down or lonely and have those emotions seem apparent to his American friends. That is one thing he misses about home, as well as, of course, speaking Japanese. The only way he can continue to speak his native tongue in America is to gather together with other Japanese students.
Another characteristic that Aoyama noted about Americans is their "vision". He said that every American, "has their own vision" or set of goals in life. This is a habit he has tried to adopt for himself and said he can go back to Japan with a clearer vision of his future. Hiroki said he has also learned time management during college days in America. Upon his graduation next spring, Aoyama plans to return to Japan to find a job.

I scanned a bunch of negatives today and edited eight of them tonight. I'm so scared that I've regressed in my capabilities as a photographer. I really hope my peak wasn't in high school, cause I'm screwed if it was. I think I'm getting too caught up in the technical aspect right now. I use to just shoot what I saw and hope I had the settings right. Granted that's not the best way to approach it, but looking at these photos... I'm scared that I've missed a lot of good chances this semester to really show what I'm capable of. These photos below are some of my absolute favorites and possibly my best work. They are a little grainy because they are originally film and scanning just isn't as good as the real thing. Nevertheless, hope you enjoy.

Above: this photo was purchased my senior year by my high school as part of an annual award ceremony. Every year (starting three years ago) they purchase four pieces of art from their students and hang them in the halls of the school. It meant a lot to me because I took the shot and printed it myself. A lot went into this photo.

Sports Shootin'

This weekend has been filled with lots of sports. Of course, I'm not participating in any of them, but standing (or sitting) awkwardly next to ridiculously well-built athletic machines and taking photos of them. Most of them barely clothed.

I think my favorite sport to shoot is diving. Not because of the barely any clothing thing, but because the photos come out so... strange. I think you'll see what I mean. I'm starting to enjoy shooting sports more and more now because I'm noticing that I can capture things that you would never see just watching the game. Catch moments that happen in a split second and are then gone (so dramatic, I know). Enjoy.

The NCAA Division 2 Swimming and Diving National Championships were held at the Rec Center this weekend (lots of capital letters in that sentence). These are some of them.

This goon was our "half-time show" on Friday night. He tried to juggle three oranges from the highest level of the diving tower. Failed. So he just jumped. And died. Not really.

I think my shutter started to close before I could catch all of the light from my strobe, but I still like the perspective.

American Vacation

(above photo) I think this is my favorite photo that I've ever taken. At least on digital...

So I spent 4th of July in 2007 on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and while walking around on the beach taking photos I started to notice a theme in my shots. And after watching the Die Hard series one evening in the hotel I decided to look for the "American Vacation". Pretty easy seeing as there were Americans on vacation everywhere. I wasn't trying to cover a story or go at this with an extreme journalistic approach or anything, I just shot what I saw. These are just a few that I liked the most.

P.S. They are washed cause blogspot sucks.

I work at the rec center. These are divers. Diving off the diving board. I'm on the diving tower next to them about 10-15 feet above them. They got a little washed out when I uploaded them, but I really like both of these.
